Very untypical composer of modern times, he advocates that from the second half of the 20th century, musical creation has strayed too far from the human condition of musicians and the public, as well as from its constructive social function, which serious music and arts in general should always fulfill.
His urge to compose started at early childhood during his first years of playing the violin, when the violin duos by Béla Bartók – which he would play with his violinist parents – inspired him to try out his own duos, followed by duos for violin and piano, string quartet pieces, and even some early symphonic studies, which earned him a prize at the Jeunesses Musicales composing competitions. Since then, he has never stopped writing and searching for his own style amidst the contemporary music panorama.
Presently violinist at the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia and violist of the Cuarteto del Pino and Schubert String Quartet, he enjoyed a broad musical education across various continents. Born in 1975 in Montevideo, Uruguay into a musicians' family, he grew up in Siegen, Germany, where he was a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Association. He pursued his main violin and composition studies in Berlin at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler with the professors Christoph Poppen, Ulf Wallin and Stephan Picard, after which he moved to the USA, where he finished his Master of Music and Artist Certificate as student of the distinguished Dr. Eduard Schmieder, with a full scholarship from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
Throughout his career, he has participated in several international music festivals and masterclasses, especially his repeated participation as composer in residence and violinist at the annual Young Artists International laureates festival and its chamber orchestra I Palpiti , formed by young talented musicians from across the world. Gabriel Bussi is member of the Galician Composers Association.
Well aware of the recent stylistic developments in the music world, and of the challenge to develop a true personal style, his compositional style refuses to destroy its own roots, always staying true to the tradition of classical central European music, without letting down his own Latin American background.
Among his recent work stands out his vocal music, foremost his opera La Tribuna and his latest work Sol de Medianoche (Midnight Sun), based on the book with the same name by the distinguished poet Luz Pozo Garza.
